MORE2 Leaders support the DREAMs of young people

Thank you to all the leaders in MORE2 congregations that emailed, called, stood in the wind, traveled to Washington DC–to send Senator Claire McCaskill our views in support of the DREAM act.  As you may know, the DREAM Act would have allowed a select group of individuals brought to the United States as undocumented children to contribute more fully to America by earning a path towards legal residence.  On December 18, 2010, Senator McCaskill supported a procedural motion to debate the DREAM Act on the Senate floor, however, the motion failed to obtain the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation.

With a heavy heart–many MORE2 leaders have expressed our need to thank Senator McCaskill for this risky vote.  She writes:

“I voted in favor of debating the DREAM Act because I believe that it is wrong to punish innocent children for the crimes of their parents.  This legislation would have only applied to children who were brought here at least five years ago by adults, children who had no choice.  These are not children who made a decision to break the law.  These children were simply the victims of adults who were law-breakers.
My faith also played a big role in my decision.  As a Christian, I found guidance in the Bible, which speaks of not penalizing children for the wrongdoing of their parents. Ezekial 18:20 reads: “The son shall not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.””
